6 Tips for Starting Your Fitness Journey

6 Tips for Starting Your Fitness Journey

I used to struggle with the all or nothing mentality in regards to my fitness and overall wellness if I'm being honest.  I would show up for weeks or even months with dedication, but then I would completely stop.  It was a bit of a yo-yo pattern that went on for a lot of my adult life.

Finally in 2016 I made a shift.  A sustainable shift that has led to over 6 + years of consistent growth.

I want to share with you the top tips that helped me make this shift that ultimately led to truly leading a healthier life.

1. Consistency > Intensity:

We don't need to be ALL OUT all the time.  I used to think that if I wasn't keeling over dying to catch my breath or so sore the next day that I couldn't walk that THIS was what was the most effective.  When I started focused on my consistency over everything else that is when a true long-term shift happened.  It started to become a part of my weekly routine + eventually over time it became a part of who I am.  It took focusing on the consistency, which then led into the habit being formed.  I started to enjoy my routine and it no longer felt like a chore anymore!

Following a program or workout calendar helped me create that consistency and dedication to keep showing up.  I always knew what was next and it took the thinking out of the process.

2.  Start Small:

We don't need hours - start with 20 minutes.  There are loads of effective workout programs that get you in and done in 20-30 minutes!  You will be surprised how great you will feel just taking that time for yourself.  Energy boosted, sweat flowing, mood boosted!  For years I kept my workouts in that 30 minute range because that is what worked for me in that phase of my busy new-mom life.  Show up consistently and watch how exercise becomes a positive part of your life!

3.  Create Convenience In Your Routine:

For all those years that I struggled I always felt like exercise was in-convenient.  After work I didn't feel like being around people anymore (introvert probs) + class times never seemed to fit into my work/family balance.  It always seemed like a chore.  When I started working out from home I realized that I could get in and done at whatever time worked for my schedule... or my kids schedule.  I could simply just press play on my workout when it worked for me.  This eliminated multiple obstacles that had held me back: homebody, introvert needs, lack of time, no one to watch the kids.  This is your journey.  There is no "better" place to exercise... do what works best for you in this period of your life.

4.  Lead with Healthy:

What I mean by this?  Start showing up + making choices because they are healthy... not because it is a fad or a quick fix.  Toss the quick fix mentality.  Nothing quick is sustainable long-term.  Exercise + fueling your body + sleep + proper rest + mindset work.

In my opinion if you can't sustain something long-term, then don't do it at all.  Do it the healthy way, avoid quick fixes and fads, and find a routine that can last you a lifetime.

5.  Choose Growth:

You aren't stuck.  Take can't out of the picture.  You CAN - it may just take some work to re-wire your habits!  Start reading and listening to personal development books and podcasts.  The School of Greatness is a personal fave for a podcast + Atomic Habits is a great starting reading point for a wellness journey.

6.  Accountability:

Find a source of accountability!  When I was introduced into my first virtual accountability group it was the glue that kept everything rolling for me.  I knew that the other members would notice if I stopped showing - it gave me that extra push on the tough days.  My personal training clients experience this with every session as their workouts are essentially scheduled just like an appointment would be.  This can also look like a gym buddy or virtual workout buddy where you can stay active together!

Leading a more active lifestyle doesn't have to look the same for everyone.  Find joy in the journey. Find the support that you need (in person or virtually) - you don't need to do this alone.
